A complete choreographic performance

The French Institute in Bucharest continues last autumn’s initiative of presenting the performance “Snow White” by Angelin Preljocaj, by offering its audience another extraordinary performance signed by one of the greatest contemporary choreographers, known and acknowledged all over the world – Philippe Decouflé.

”Sombreros” is a complete choreographic performance, combining video art, music, theater, cinema and, of course, dance in a fascinating whirl. The images in homage of Murnau and of the “Western Spaghetti” movies succeed rapidly on music signed Brian Eno: huge Chinese shadows in shining black and white, visual effects produced by means of top level technology or by the simplest, yet most ingenious, devices – such as a lantern –, the whole of it being enlivened by the energetic grace of ten dancers, actors and musicians of DCA company.

When watching “Sombreros”, we understand why this choreographer has been moving and enchanting, for 20 years, the audience worldwide. Alternating between the common and the extraordinary, the popular style and the sophisticated one, the closeness to the audience and elegant poetry, direct simplicity and mastership, his performances approach the idea of entertainment, at the same time impressing us, amusing us and, above all, completely enchanting us!

Philippe Decouflé founds his DCA company in 1983. Following the success registered by his first performances, in 1989 he compels recognition on the occasion of a parade along Champs Elysées, Bleu Blanc Goude, and especially on the occasion of the Olympic Games in Albertville, for which he created the impressive opening and closing ceremonies. Sine then, the phrase “decoufleries” refers to the unique art of this choreographer, who succeeds to magically combine in his performances the circus, the imagery and the dance.

This performance is organized under the high patronage of Mr. Theodor Paleologu, Minister of Culture, Cults and National Patrimony.

NOB Events in June Print E-mail
The season 2008-2009 of the National Opera House in Bucharest is over; yet, in June, the audience will have the opportunity to watch performances staged in partnership with our institution.

This year, the National Ballet School, the current Choreography High School “Floria Capsali”, celebrates its 60th anniversary. Its annual performance will take place at the NOB, on Friday, the 5th of June, at 6:30 p.m.

Founded in 1982 by Mrs. Magdalena Rovinescu, NOB former leading ballerina, the ballet school for children "M BALLET STUDIO" has been functional ever since, in the framework of the National Opera House in Bucharest. "M BALLET STUDIO" aimed and succeeded to identify and promote young talents bearing the fame of Romanian ballet all over the world.

By the end of this year’s classes, the ballet school “M Studio” presents the performance “The Doll Shop”, on the 13th of June (at 6:30 p.m.) and the 14th of June 2009 (at 11:00 a.m.).

On the 18th and 19th of June (at 7:00 p.m.) and on the 20th of June 2009 (at 6:30 p.m.), a dance performance entitled “Sombreros” will be presented at the NOB, in partnership with the French Embassy and the French Institute in Bucharest. The performance is staged by Philippe Decouflé, and it was created in 2008, inspired by the theme of the shadow, a “poetical” and sophisticated (both technically and aesthetically) game of the “Decouflé” classical choreography with the video image.
