DER FLIEGENDE HOLLANDER
(THE FLYING DUTCHMAN)

REVIVAL - 20th March 2010

The National Opera House in Bucharest (NOB) invites you to a long awaited event of this season, the revival of the performance “Der Fliegende Holländer” („The Flying Dutchman”) by Richard Wagner, which will take place on the 20th of March, at 6:30 p.m.

After several years’ absence, this Wagnerian opera, which cannot be missing from the repertoire of any important lyrical theater, will be revived on the Bucharest stage, under the baton of Master Cristian Mandeal, one of the most reputed Romanian conductors. The NOB soloists, orchestra and choir will contribute to the performance.

The authors of the premiere on the 18th of November 2000 gathered last weeks, in order to revive Wagner’s opera: stage director Beatrice Rancea – who made her debut as an opera director with this work, signing also the stage movement and the lightning design –, fashion designer Irina Schrotter – who also debuted in the show business world at that time, creating the stage costumes – and the choir master Stelian Olariu, who turned the choir into a credible “character”, in terms of Wagner’s works. The decors are conceived by Helmut Stürmer, a personality of the international scenography.

The main part will be performed by baritone Stefan Ignat, who already approached Wagner’s work in 2006, when he successfully performed the role Wotan in “The Rhinegold”, at the Teatro Nacional de Sao Carlos in Lisbon. The American baritone Gary Simpson is also invited to perform the part of the Dutchman on the Bucharest stage. Beside these two soloists, the cast also includes (in alphabetic order): Ana Maria Comsa, Madeleine Pascu (Senta), Mihnea Lamatic, Horia Sandu (Daland), Marius Vlad Budoiu, Cristian Mogosan (Erik), Gabriela Dragusin, Sidonia Nica (Mary), Lucian Corchis, Liviu Indricau (Steersman).

The next performances scheduled for this month will take place on Sunday, 21st of March and Wednesday, 31st of March, starting 6:30 p.m.

On Tuesday, 16th of March, at 12:00 a.m., a press conference on this event will take place in the NOB Foyer, held by Mr. Catalin Ionescu Arbore, Director General of the National Opera House in Bucharest, Cristian Mandeal, Beatrice Rancea, Stelian Olariu and performers of the leading roles.
